Tips for Choosing a Lightweight Stroller

7 tips for choosing a lightweight stroller for your baby

With your kids in tow, you’re in for a lot of fun and adventure. Your stroller should make things easy and breezy, not weigh you down! Opt for a lightweight stroller that will keep your family on the move without skipping a beat.

If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to choosing a lightweight stroller that still offers the bells and whistles you want, keep reading. In this article, we discuss seven tips for choosing a stroller that’s everything you need it to be.

7 tips for choosing a lightweight stroller

1) Check the weight

If you’re aiming for a lightweight stroller, first things first: check the weight. You can find this information listed in the product specifications.

To give you an idea of how much a stroller might weigh, the Bugaboo Lynx is our lightest full-size stroller at 20.7 pounds, while the one-second fold, ultra-compact stroller, the Butterfly, only weighs 16.09 pounds.

Since the Butterfly is a seat stroller, it’s appropriate for kids aged six months to four years or can be used from day one with a car seat. Fold and unfold this small but sturdy stroller at lightning speed, and store or carry it in a cinch. The design also offers plenty of storage in the underseat basket.

If you have a newborn and need a full-size stroller that offers the ability to add a bassinet or car seat as well as different seat options, you’ll want to opt for the Lynx. With super-soft fabrics all around and an extra-large sun canopy that fully extends, your baby will be cozy and protected.

Plus, this stroller is highly maneuverable no matter the terrain, which brings us to the next point.

2) Opt for maneuverability

Your lightweight stroller should facilitate seeing the world regardless of where that takes you! You’ll want to choose a stroller with great maneuverability that can stroll through the woods or glide through busy city streets with only a one-handed push.

Here’s a tip from stroller pros: Strollers that have one handlebar (instead of two) are easier to push with one hand. If you’re already a parent, you know that being able to do things one-handed is a lifesaver.

Speaking of things that are lifesavers, choose a stroller that features removable fabrics and is easy to clean. You’ll thank yourself later.

3) Make sure it’s easy to fold and carry

Part of the reason you want a lightweight stroller is so that it’s easy as pie to lift into your trunk, carry up and down the subway stairs, and the like.

But that means your stroller should not only be lightweight but also easy to fold and carry. After all, a lightweight stroller doesn’t do much good if it’s hard to fold or awkward to carry.

What are some of the various factors to consider when thinking about how you want your stroller to fold? Consider whether it folds into one piece or two, check the dimensions, determine if you’ll need one hand or two to fold it, and see if the stroller stands by itself when folded.

For example, the Bugaboo Lynx offers a compact, one-piece fold that is self-standing — all without removing the seat.

And, the Bugaboo Bee 6, our greatest compact stroller, folds with one hand (there’s that one-handed advantage again!) and has an integrated self-stand for storing it in your hallway or next to a table.

When you aren’t strolling, carry your stroller with a comfort transport bag complete with shoulder straps and handy wheels.

Hopefully, you’re starting to get an idea of some of the features you want in your lightweight stroller.

4) Choose a travel system

A lightweight stroller doesn’t have to mean limited options. You can find a lightweight travel system complete with features that grow with your baby.

If you’re not familiar with this baby product lingo, a travel system consists of a car seat that fits into the base in your car as well as your stroller. This provides a seamless transition from the stroller to the car and back again without rocking the boat or disturbing your baby.

Travel system strollers often offer bassinet and seat options, too, so the stroller will see you through many years to come.

To make your life that much easier, the Turtle One by Nuna car seat can be used with all of our current Bugaboo strollers. This means seamless travel no matter which stroller suits your family’s needs best.

Since we’re focusing on all things lightweight, it’s worth mentioning that the Turtle One by Nuna weighs 9.9 pounds, and our other car seat option, the Turtle Air by Nuna, weighs 7 pounds and is compatible with the Bugaboo Bee, Donkey, Fox, and Lynx strollers.

5) Don’t sacrifice storage

Just because you won’t always be carrying pounds and pounds of goodies on your lightweight adventures doesn’t mean you shouldn’t at least have the option of doing so! Don’t sacrifice storage.

A lightweight stroller can still offer ample underseat storage for when you need to bring things along for yourself or your tiny partner in crime. The underseat basket on the Bugaboo Butterfly, for example, accommodates up to 17 pounds.

And, if you anticipate needing more storage on the occasional errand outing, consider keeping an organizer bag on hand.

This water-repellent, multi-pocket stroller organizer is a must-have companion for any parent. It’s easy to attach and remove thanks to sturdy Velcro straps and conveniently turns into a tote bag for when you’re on the go.

6) Plan for two in your lightweight stroller

We’ve talked a lot about lightweight strollers and haven’t even mentioned what parents of two babies should do!

A lightweight and compact double stroller can be your best friend. With two kids along for the ride, you can still enjoy the benefits of a maneuverable stroller that’s easy to transport. Read more about what to look for in a double stroller here.

You can also attach the Bugaboo comfort wheeled board to our Bee 6 stroller to make room for two without adding too much weight.

7) Select other lightweight baby products

If you’re on the hunt for a lightweight stroller, that probably means you value lightweight, easy-to-handle baby products in general. We applaud this since we believe baby items should make your life easier, not more complicated.
