When to buy a baby car seat

A baby car seat needs careful planning and plenty of research in advance, so that you have one ready well before your due date, just in case your baby decides to make an early appearance.

If possible, have it installed in your car, ready and waiting. The last thing you or your partner want is to be installing a car seat when your baby's about to arrive.

With that in mind, let's explore the key features to consider when selecting an infant car seat.

Important car seat features

1) Safety features

Safety should always come first when it comes to choosing a car seat. Always check that the car seat you’re looking at meets the latest safety standards in your country. Look for a label that displays the model number and manufacturing date, as these details will help you check for any recalls.

2) Size

Your car seat should be a perfect fit for your baby. You can typically find the weight and size recommendations in the car seat product information. Bugaboo car seats come with baby inserts to provide tailored support to newborns, making sure they're snug and secure in the seat. If you have a premature baby who can’t be in a semi-reclined position, consult your pediatrician on the best way to travel.

3) Car seat installation

A car seat that’s quick and simple to install can make your life so much easier. Start by checking whether your car has a LATCH system, which stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. It's a standardized setup in many modern vehicles that allows for an easier and more secure car seat installation process. If this is not available in your car, see if the seat belt can be fastened snugly and securely through the car seat’s designated belt path.

If you're using your car seat with a base, make sure they fit properly in your vehicle and can be clicked on and off easily. A properly installed car seat should not move more than an inch side-to-side or front-to-back. Bugaboo car seat bases are easy to place in the car, and installation can be done in seconds. They also come with indicators that visually confirm when everything is correctly installed.

For babies, you should use a rear-facing position as it offers better support for their head, neck, and spine in the event of a sudden stop or collision. Keep your child rear-facing in their car seat for as long as possible. Some experts even suggest waiting until they reach four years of age before transitioning to a forward-facing position.

4) Travel system compatibility

For added convenience, choose a baby car seat that’s compatible with a travel system, which is a car seat and stroller designed to work together. This lets you move your baby from the car to the stroller (and back) without taking them out of the car seat.

Our car seats are designed to work with all of our current stroller models. You might need special adapters to connect them — check in your region whether they're included in the box, or if you need to purchase them separately.

5) Portability

Since a click-in car seat is designed to move in and out of the car, portability is key, so look for a car seat that’s light and easy to carry, with a handle that feels comfortable in your hand. We’ve designed the Bugaboo Turtle Air Shield by Nuna to be a lightweight, secure, and comfortable car seat, weighing just 8.8 lbs.

6) Comfort for your child

Look for a car seat with proper head support and soft, high-quality fabric. Always use padding designed specifically for the car seat instead of adding blankets or cushions. Choose a seat with adjustable head support to accommodate your baby as they grow. A washable insert that uses extra-soft fabric like merino wool is also a great option for keeping your newborn cozy and comfortable.

7) Canopy options

Make the most of your car seat by choosing one with a canopy that protects your baby from the elements when you're using it with your stroller. Our car seats come with a UPF 50+ sun canopy with a peek-a-boo window, letting you keep an eye on them as you explore. The seats also have a smart shade and even magnetic clips for quiet adjustments, so you won’t disturb your newborn.

8) Maintenance

Infant car seats can get messy in no time, so choose one that’s easy to clean, with washable and wipeable fabrics. With our car seats, you can easily remove the fabric and throw it in the washing machine for a quick cleanup. Make sure you use cold water on a delicate cycle, and let the fabric air dry completely before putting it back on the car seat.

Ready for the journey ahead

Having the right infant car seat will make sure your newborn stays safe from the very first journey. Opt for one that’s the correct size, easy to install, and comfortable for both you and your child. For added convenience, go with a travel system that allows you to seamlessly transition from car to stroller and back again.
