That’s why we’re on a mission to help you tick all those boxes, while making a more responsible choice too. Our latest lower-impact technique, rolling out from 2026 with the Bugaboo Donkey 6, is dope-dye technology.

This innovation uses less water, less energy, and fewer chemicals to create richer tones in our fabrics. It’s designed to withstand your baby’s journey and beyond, so you can pass your pushchair from parent to parent, without losing a drop of colour.

How does dope-dye technology work?

Dope-dye technology, also known as spin-dyeing or solution-dyeing, creates colourfast fabrics that can weather years of sunny strolls and regular cleaning. In traditional dyeing techniques, the colour sits on the surface of the fabric after weaving. However, dope-dye technology helps textiles maintain their vibrancy over time by working the pigments into the fibres before the material is made.

Think of it like baking a cake: You could frost a vanilla cake with chocolate icing, or you could blend cocoa throughout the batter, so the chocolate flavour permeates every bite. Dope-dye technology is the "chocolate batter" approach. The colour becomes an integral part of the fibre itself, not just a surface treatment.

Colour that’s kinder to the planet: Why it matters

Dope-dye technology delivers a far more sustainable solution for the textile industry. It dramatically reduces energy and water consumption and chemical exposure to finished fabrics.

1. Longer product lifespan

Buying a durable product is one of the most sustainable choices you can make — less waste is thrown into landfill, and quality products can be passed on, reducing the burden of over-manufacturing.

Fabrics created using dope-dye technology are designed to go the distance; they resist fading and retain their vibrancy. This means your pushchair will look and feel newer for longer, even after years of exposure to sunlight and washing away sticky snacks.

2. Water-saving fabric dyes

Traditional fabric dyeing techniques typically use 100-180 litres of water per kilogram of fabric for the dye baths, rinsing, and finishing processes. Dope-dye technology cuts out most of those water-intensive steps, saving approximately 85 liters of water per kilogram of fabric.

By using dope-dye technology instead of conventional dyes for select colours of the Bugaboo Donkey 6, we saved about 154 litres of water. And for the Bugaboo Donkey 6 twin, we saved an estimated 298 litres.

3. Minimizing chemicals

By adding pigments into the fibres, dope-dye technology uses substantially fewer dyes, fixatives, and chemicals, which traditional methods typically need for preparing and treating fabric and bonding dyes to the surface. This means your baby’s pushchair has gone through fewer chemical processes to achieve a more vibrant and durable finish.

Dope-dye technology has far-reaching environmental benefits. It means we can minimise our chemical footprint across our entire production chain; from reducing the need to manufacture, handle, and store raw chemicals and hazardous substances, to less chemical wastewater at the end of the line. This is a huge step toward cleaner manufacturing, and it’s essential for water conservation.

4. Reducing energy consumption

Traditional wet-dyeing techniques typically rely on substantial amounts of energy to heat water for dye baths to precise temperatures. They also need energy to circulate hot dye baths through industrial equipment and then dry the fabric afterwards. Dope-dye technology for our pushchair fabrics removes those steps, reducing our energy consumption as a result.

5. Improved recycling

When conventional fabrics need to be recycled, they go through additional processes to remove or treat the dye sitting on the surface. The absence of additional chemical residues on dope-dyed fabrics makes them a much simpler product to recycle.

Introducing dope-dye technology for our pushchair fabrics is just one part of a bigger picture at Bugaboo. The launch of the Bugaboo Donkey 6 is another step forward on our mission. Dope-dyed fabrics are a first for us, and as a starting point, we’ve used this technology to create this pushchair’s Heritage Black, Deep Indigo, Fern Green, and Cocoa Brown colours.

But that’s not all for the Bugaboo Donkey 6. Every version of this pushchair uses bio-based components to replace most conventional plastics. The design also includes recycled fabrics and aluminum, and it incorporates high-quality vegan leather. Plus, its protective coatings are PFAS-free.

Like all our pushchairs, the Bugaboo Donkey 6 has a modular design that makes it easier to replace parts, if you ever need to. On top of the material choices we make, this creates a pushchair that’s built to last and fulfills our commitment to crafting long-lasting products that are easy to repair, refurbish, and recycle.
