During my first pregnancy, I packed my diaper bag as if I were preparing for an expedition. I thought I had to carry everything “just in case.” My bag was always heavy and cluttered. Now, with my newborn the second time around, things look very different. One day, at a check-up, my doctor left the door open and glanced around, expecting I had more things with me. Then she looked at me and said, “Oh—that’s it?”

That small exchange made me stop and think about how little I actually carry now. I’ve come to see that I feel calmer and lighter when I focus on packing a few high-quality essentials in my diaper bag instead of trying to prepare for every possible situation.

What is a diaper bag?

Before diving into the list, let’s answer a question many new parents have: What exactly is a diaper bag?

A diaper bag is a dedicated bag designed to carry baby essentials, like diapers, wipes, clothes, bottles, and more, when you’re on the go. It typically has multiple compartments to keep things organized, wipeable or waterproof materials for easy cleaning, and often comes with a portable changing mat.

Many parents opt for a specialized diaper bag, while others use their everyday tote, backpack, or purse, depending on lifestyle. What matters most is that it fits your daily routine and makes outings with your baby more manageable.

1. Diapers and wet wipes

If you only pack one thing, this is it. Diapers and wipes cover almost every situation, whether it’s a diaper change or an unexpected spill. For shorter outings, I often just tuck a diaper and a small pack of wipes into my purse. That’s enough – no bulky bag needed.

Parenting tip: Opt for eco-friendly diapers and biodegradable wipes whenever possible. Small sustainable choices can make a big difference.

2. A compact changing mat

Not every surface is baby-friendly. From cafe bathrooms to the back of the car, I’ve ended up changing diapers in all sorts of places. My Bugaboo changing clutch comes readily with a portable changing mat, which means I can always make sure my baby is comfortable and clean wherever we are. It folds neatly, wipes down easily, and fits into even a small bag.

Parenting tip: A good changing mat isn’t just practical – it gives you peace of mind, knowing your baby can stay clean and comfy no matter where you are.

3. One high-contrast toy

I usually carry one small black-and-white toy, like a rattle or soft toy. It’s designed for newborn vision, but what I love most is how happy it makes my baby. And honestly, sometimes, he’s just as fascinated by a plant or a picture on the wall. It's a reminder that babies don't need endless stimulation, and a little can go a long way.

Parenting tip: Choose safe, non-toxic toys made with organic or sustainable materials. Mindful parenting starts with mindful choices.

4. Clean clothes

During my first pregnancy, I thought I’d need to bring multiple outfits “just in case.” Now I know that one well-chosen spare outfit is usually all I need. A good, well-fitting diaper makes a big difference, too, since the only real risk is then a spit-up. I like to go for soft, organic cotton fabrics that fold down small and feel gentle on the skin.

Parenting tip: Neutral colors and simple designs make it easier to mix and match, so you always have a clean, cozy backup.

5. A burp cloth

This is probably the item I use the most. A simple burp cloth hardly takes up any space, but is so useful. It’s lightweight, easy to wash, and incredibly versatile – a true minimalist parenting essential.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a diaper bag?

If your lifestyle is fast-paced or urban, a regular purse or backpack may be all you need. Personally, I love using my Bugaboo changing clutch because it keeps things compact and easy. But for travel days or longer adventures, a lightweight, wipe-clean, eco-conscious bag with multiple compartments can make life smoother.

Some prefer a backpack with compartments like the Bugaboo changing backpack, and some love a tote-style one like the Bugaboo changing bag. These are stylish, sustainable options that don't scream “baby bag” and blend seamlessly into everyday fashion.

Should I pack a diaper bag before the baby arrives?

Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to feel calm and prepared for those early newborn days. Packing your diaper bag a few weeks before your due date ensures you’re ready for hospital visits, the ride home, or those first walks.

Final thoughts

I’ve realized you don’t always need a big, specialized diaper bag to feel prepared. If I’m not heading out for a long stroller walk, my regular purse with the Bugaboo changing clutch inside works perfectly. It keeps everything light, organized, and easy to carry. Keeping my diaper bag minimal has been one way I’ve found a little calm. With just these few essentials, I feel ready for most situations – and for me, that’s more than enough.
