2015-12-15 - Tweed, TENCEL®, and cotton may not seem like an average choice for stroller fabrics, but our latest special edition, the Bugaboo Cameleon³ Blend combines all three! Come behind the scenes and see what it takes to create a stroller full of refined new materials.
Our inventive spirit goes beyond the introduction of new products. We also strive to source new materials and find original ways to use them on our strollers and accessories. Our latest special edition stroller, the Bugaboo Cameleon³ Blend, combines a refined, soft, brushed polyester tweed outer fabric with a denim blue TENCEL® lining. We spoke to Lise Hordijk, Product Developer Textiles on the Bugaboo Cameleon3 Blend about the new-to-Bugaboo fabrics and the process of creating this effortlessly stylish special edition stroller.
A defining vision to lead the way
“It all starts with the vision of the lead designer,” says Lise. For the Bugaboo Cameleon³ Blend, that was Special Collections Designer Barber Ebbinge. “She had envisioned a naturally stylish stroller with a serene, natural and classic look using a variety of new-to-Bugaboo fabrics and colors, and my job as a Project Developer was to realize that vision.” One of the fabrics chosen by Barber was tweed for the outside of the stroller, giving it that classic look but with a soft character, inspired by Scandinavian fashion. “Tweed is an irregular, soft and flexible wool or wool-blend fabric with a twill weave. We use broken twill, better known as herringbone structure. Yet wool tweed isn’t ideal for everyday use on a stroller as it absorbs water, stains and odors, and isn’t washing machine safe.” Taking this into consideration, the team arrived at an inventive solution: Polyester tweed. Polyester is a user-, maintenance-, and season-friendly fabric; since polyester is a very rigid and smooth fiber, it gives the impression that it is lighter than wool while maintaining the same denier (weight-per-unit-length). “To achieve this unique look, we blend two different types of polyester in every yarn. As a finishing we brush the front side to give it a soft to touch feel.”

Blending fabrics for a modern look
As the ‘Blend’ part in the name suggests, this special edition stroller features various fabrics that have been carefully selected to create a modern look. To complement the polyester tweed exterior, the team sought out a denim fabric for the lining and the matching footmuff. “We considered cotton since denim is made with cotton yet decided on TENCEL®, a natural, man-made fiber which comes from the Eucalyptus tree. Similar to cotton, TENCEL® is soft yet strong and durable. What’s great about TENCEL® is that it transports moisture in its fibers keeping children dry and it is soft to touch.” And there’s the added bonus that it’s an eco-conscious material and carries the European Eco label since only trees from sustainable forests are used. When asked about the color, Lise answers: “TENCEL® is often used as a soft and luxurious alternative for denim clothing. By choosing to use it, we achieve a denim look, but are also able to maintain the natural qualities of TENCEL®. Since it is a raw material, some of the irregularities of the yarn can be seen in the fabric.”
It’s all in the details
The Bugaboo Cameleon3 Blend demonstrates Bugaboo’s attention for quality, in all of its details. The leather-look handlebar and carrycot handle were made using two shades of brown, while the carrycot mattress and footmuff boast a luxurious light-grey quilted jersey fabric. The complementary chunky cotton knitted blanket is dyed a pale scarlet, referencing the outdoors (think bricks or dried hydrangeas).
