What's in her bag? Steph Douglas, Don't Buy Her Flowers

2015-06-24 - Steph Douglas is the founder of Don’t Buy Her Flowers – an online gift service that delivers what new mothers really want (think tea, truffles, magazines and dry shampoo) instead of blooms. As a mother of two kids, she is always balancing work, motherhood and me time.

“When we had our first baby, I received eight bunches of flowers. I didn’t have the vases or the energy to do anything with them and while they were lovely gestures, it just seemed such a waste. Those first months of motherhood are tough – so I started putting little packages of magazines, chocolate (and gin) together for new mum friends and they generally came back with ‘this is the first gift I’ve had for me’. That’s where Don’t Buy Her Flowers started.

When it comes to life-work balance, it’s really important to recognise you can’t do everything you did before and run a business on top. Having support is also key: at around the same time I started the business, I got involved with Mother’s Meeting. They have a Business Club as well as events such as ‘Netwalking’ where you come together with other truly inspiring mums – every time I leave feeling like I can take on the world.

Whether running my business or with the kids, I need a bag that unites those two worlds. The Storksak x Bugaboo bag looks great – often changing bags are so ‘twee’. I’ve never worn something twee in my life, but suddenly I’m supposed to because I’m a mother? It’s also great quality and designed to last. From business club to playground, it’s about keeping a sense of who you are, without compromising on the practical side. More than anything, mothering definitely isn’t the end, it’s just the beginning.
