Strolling in style with Susie Bubble
2017-04-19 - Susannah Lau a.k.a Susie Bubble tells us what it’s like to be a worldwide fashion icon, blogger and now for the first time, a mom with a Bugaboo Bee⁵.
Style Bubble (your blog) has been around since before ‘smartphone’ was even a word. What’s it like being a fashion blogger now?
The landscape has certainly changed dramatically! Ten years ago when I started Style Bubble, I could never even have imagined platforms like Instagram or SnapChat having the influence that they do today. Fashion blogging has obviously become more of a business, with more opportunities for people to make an actual living from it. Despite that commercialization aspect though, I still think blogging and social media has created a much more diverse array of voices in fashion – people with different points of view on fashion that is unique from mainstream media. It’s something I’m still deeply passionate about and for me, producing content for the blog and for social media still gives me great pleasure.
Your blogpost about dressing during pregnancy quotes “The zanier it looked, the better it made me feel.” Has that always been true or was it the mythical pregnancy brain talking?
I think it was important to still feel like “me” when I was pregnant and my style and the way I dress is a very physical expression of that. I also didn’t want to buy a load of maternity clothes that I was never ever going to wear again so it made sense to fit my bump into my existing wardrobe. There are so many designers who do silhouettes that are bump-friendly and I had a lot of fun molding my outfits to my changing body. Now that I’ve given birth, dressing for motherhood presents a different challenge – namely ensuring Nico has easy access to my boobs for feeding – but again, it’s still important to avoid dressing in a way that is too stereotypically “mumsy".
We spotted a snap of you breastfeeding at Prada. This is really a new frontier (for you, and perhaps also for the fashion world). How does the fashion world at-large take to parenthood?
To be honest, I was a bit nervous about integrating back into the fashion world with a baby. There are obviously practical issues to consider in terms of my work life – how will I do fashion weeks with Nico in tow, how will I get any writing done whilst cluster-feeding her, how will I be able to leave her behind when I travel. But in terms of the fashion world, they are generally very supportive and embracing of parenthood. Fashion is of course an industry dominated with many women who are also mothers, and in that way it is very understanding and empathetic. And even in seemingly intimidating environments – like the Prada store – you find out people are super welcoming and accommodating! It’s been a pleasant surprise, easing myself back into my work life and the fashion world and finding out it isn’t as daunting as I thought it would be.
You travel a lot. And we mean A LOT. And now you need a pushchair to accompany you. What kinds of things do you need your stroller to do along the way?
The biggest factor is definitely easy to transport – on planes, on trains and in taxis. The one-fold feature of the Bugaboo Bee5 makes it perfect for travelling and I’m looking forward to taking it on trips with me. Generally speaking, I want the stroller to be comfortable for Nico and thus far, she’s loving both the Bugaboo Bee5 and the Bugaboo Cameleon3. As long as she’s happy to be transported in her stroller, then it gets a thumbs up from me!
You’ve got the Bugaboo Cameleon3 Elements and we spotted you taking that to Tate Modern. How does the Bugaboo Bee5 compare to the Bugaboo Cameleon3?
Obviously it’s a lot more compact and lighter and definitely easier to take on the Tube and on trains. I love the Bugaboo Cameleon3 for taking Nico around locally and if I know there will be step-free access on transport. The Bugaboo Cameleon3 is for roaming around the bumpy terrain of Hampstead Heath and the Bugaboo Bee5 is for zipping around Central London.
Where did you last take the Bugaboo Bee5, and have you gotten any comments on it? If so, can you kiss and tell?
I wanted to try out the Bugaboo Bee5 on the train so we took it up to Wakefield to see a fashion exhibition there as well as visiting our friends in Manchester. I did get a few nice comments from other fashion journalists about the print on the sun canopy!
If we may be so bold, can you tell us your ‘thoughts’ behind the color combination you picked for your Bugaboo Bee5?
Bold is definitely the word for what I chose! I’m obviously drawn to prints and so the Wave pattern was my first choice for the sun canopy, complemented by the burgundy on the carrycot. When Nico is older, the seat on the Bugaboo Bee5 will be in the botanical print which will make for a bit of a heady mix! I know people tend to go for plain colorways on their prams but I wanted it to reflect my own tastes. It was really fun choosing the colors and patterns on the website!
Has Nico already experienced her first fashion show (from the front row)? If so, who and where?
NO! I’m not really keen on bringing a newborn baby to a fashion show. A) The noise level at a fashion show may not be so great for a baby. And B) if Nico starts kicking off in the middle of it, it would be awful for the designer/label. I recently took Nico up to the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield to see J.W. Anderson’s new exhibition. Exhibitions and presentations are a more gentle way of taking Nico with me to fashion environments as you can duck in and out if needs be and it’s much less stressful.
What do you look forward to most about Nico growing up?
Seeing what sort of a personality she will have and learning everything about her likes, dislikes, traits and quirks. Steve and I want to allow Nico the freedom to be whoever she wants to be and that will be exciting to see!
