2015-08-26 - We’re celebrating the 100,000th Bugaboo Donkey sold this month with a series of portraits highlighting the convertible stroller’s best features. First up, a day at Rotterdam’s new indoor market, De Markthal, where you can shop until you drop!
Our critical test panel for the day comprises teaching assistant Anna Lambregts (29) and her son Rhys (3) – who admits to feeling like a king on a throne while sitting in the Bugaboo Donkey. Situated in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, De Markthal (marketplace) is a true food Walhalla, housing over 100 food stalls. Designed by famous Dutch architects MVRDV, the building is shaped like a giant arch, the ceiling decorated in a one-hectare large mural of fresh produce, fruit, vegetables, and flowers. Everything can be found at the indoor market, from roasted nuts to tropical fruits, fresh-cut flowers and French macarons. And even, no joke, dried donkey-meat sausages. Where better to see how much we can fit into the Bugaboo Donkey’s side luggage basket and under-seat basket!
Score after 1 hour: 4 tangelos, 1 grapefruit, 6 mini bananas
Total weight: 1.5kg
The sheer amount of choice upon entering De Markthal is pretty overwhelming at first, but it’s a breeze once you figure out the system - the market is made up of sections organised by food group. Our first stop is fruit stall Tropica, where the tropical offerings include ripe island avocados and star fruit - we are happy to take a sample.
Score after 2 hours: 1 loaf of freshly-baked bread, 2 bags of warm-roasted nuts, 2 cannoli
Total weight: 3kg
Thanks to the side basket, our fruit and vegetables can safely be storedwithout getting bruised. Rhys keeps his favourite pet dinosaur at a safe distance as he snacks on a handful of nuts from family-run stall Elbnuts.
Score after 2.5 hours: 3 dried sausages, 2 aubergines, 2 sweet potatoes, 1 large stem of ginger, 1 bunch of coriander, 1 bunch of spring onions, 1 large bunch of carrots, 1 bunch of chives, 1 leek.
Total weight: 6kgs
After stopping for a quick espresso (and a froyo for Rhys) at Amy’s, we take a look around the outer rings of the market where we come across tulip bulbs and other speciality stalls such as Heerlijk & Eerlijk Deli selling delicious donkey-meat sausages.
Score after 3 hours : 1 bag of sushi rice, 1 bag of palm sugar, 1 pot of tamarind paste, 1 pot of chili bean sauce, 1 shaker of garam masala
Total weight: 9.5kgs
The most outer ring of De Markthal is home to a number of cafes and restaurants, as well as some speciality supermarkets. It’s easy to spend hours looking around Asian supermarket Wah Nam Hong, and the Bugaboo Donkey can be manoeuvred quite easily through the relatively narrow paths. Even though this stroller functions as a sturdy packing mule, it’s surprisingly light on its feet… ahem, wheels. In the supermarket, the under-seat basket really comes in handy for glass jars filled with foreign delicacies.
Score after 3.5 hours: 1 bucket of cherry tomatoes, 1 bunch of sunflowers, 1 bunch of Gladiolas
Total weight: 12kgs
The market is a great place for kids to experience new sights, sounds, and especially tastes! Try exotic treats including octopus and cheese with fudge at 21 Pinchos Tapasbar – a great place to sit upstairs and look over the entire market. Thankfully, the Bugaboo Donkey proves to even be light enough to get up the stairs with a little help from the staff.
Final score after 4 hours: 6kgs in the side basket + 10kgs in the under-seat basket +15kgs of Rhys in the seat
Six kilos of fruit and vegetables and a whopping ten kilos of other produce managed to fit into the Bugaboo Donkey Mono – we could have fit in even more, but decided best to work out our arms a little too!
Recommended accessories for a day out shopping with the Bugaboo Donkey Mono are the Bugaboo Cup Holder, Bugaboo Wool Blanket, and the Bugaboo Parasol. Shown here is the Bugaboo Donkey in mono configuration with a Bugaboo Donkey Extendable Sun Canopy in ice blue.
