The Great Summer Outdoors: Into the Woods
The Great Summer Outdoors: Into the Woods
2015-08-21 - Want to get outdoors with your children this summer? Head out to a neighbourhood park or a nearby forest for an escape from the city heat. A walk in nature is a grounding, refreshing and invigorating experience for the whole clan!
The key to walking in the woods with your family is to keep it light and easy. Don’t be too ambitious and remember to be flexible; nature abides by its own rules. Your walk may be shorter than you’re used to (goodbye to those 30 kilometre hikes!) but it’s all about enjoying the experience. Stop frequently to examine the fauna and flora and incorporate games to spark your children’s curiosity, creativity and self-discovery (and let’s be honest, yours too). Into the wild we go!
The night before
To get your children excited about your day outdoors, read them an adventurous story before you tuck them in for the night. We love Bill Martin’s Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Michael Rosen’s We’re Going on a Bear Hunt for the younger ones and Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are for the older ones.
Wear a good pair of walking shoes or sneakers. Or, since the kids are going to get pretty dirty out there, rain boots may be your best bet. Pack a bag with the food and drink essentials, sunscreen, insect repellent and maybe even a small first aid kit – you never know what your kids will get up to! Oh, and speaking of, a change of clothes is never a bad idea – we all know how tricky it is to go to the bathroom in the wild.
Pack a hearty lunch
If you plan to be out for the whole day, take a nice lunch break. Find a spot under a tree or out in the sun and lay out a picnic blanket so that everyone can rest their feet. Apples, sandwiches, juice boxes and don’t forget snacks, and a lot of them. Your walk may take longer than you expect.
I spy with my little eye…
If all that Mother Nature has to offer isn’t enough to keep the children entertained, here are some suggestions for games to play along the way. Challenge them to a round of hide-and-seek in between the trees or I-Spy to inspire them to look up from their mud-covered wellies. Bring a notepad and colouring pencils so your children can document their favourite creepy crawlers. Create a map of your route like true explorers and you are the first ones to discover this land. Spot tracks in the mud and imagine where the animals have run off to. Make daisy crowns. Magnifying glasses and compasses can come in handy too!
Collect the goods
Jars or small tins are great ways to gather flowers, leaves, shells, twigs or stones. Read up on foraging for food in the wild – children love picking berries in the summertime! Create artworks with them when you get home, or display them in your home so your children can proudly show off their collections to their friends. Collect bugs and insects and examine them better at home before releasing them into the wild again.
The end is near
While you might want to pick up speed to get back home at a reasonable hour, your children might start to slow down. They might start pulling at your legs and demand to be held for the last stretch. Your stroller will come in handy at this point! Or we recommend working out those arms before heading out with the clan. Exercise goes a long way, right?
So what are you waiting for? Get out there!
