Important safety information announcement for bugaboo cameleon + car seat and wheeled board

December , 2011

The safety and wellbeing of our customers is paramount to Bugaboo.
In July, Bugaboo issued customers warning label kits and warning stickers after receiving reports that incorrect installation of a car seat with either one of two adapters (models 80400GC01 and 80401GC02) can pose a safety hazard if used in combination with the Bugaboo Cameleon and Wheeled Board.  We now have a long-term solution designed to eliminate that risk.  As such, we are joining the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in voluntarily recalling those two adapter models to install a free service kit, which includes the new part, installation instructions and warning labels. The service kit will be available mid December 2011.

Bugaboo learned in July that incorrect use of a car seat installed with adapters (models 80400GC01 and 80401GC02) on a Bugaboo Cameleon in combination with a Wheeled Board model 85500WB01 (on the market since August 2009) can cause a safety risk.  If the car seat with adapters is installed on the Bugaboo Cameleon with the child facing the world, and not facing the parent, the release button of the car seat is exposed to the possibility of being hit by the Bugaboo wheeled board accessory, becoming disconnected from the adapter and potentially causing the car seat to fall.

The risk does not occur in other Bugaboo stroller + car seat + adapters combinations.

While we expect this particular combination of events to occur very rarely, we have designed a service solution to eliminate any possibility of a potential safety hazard.  A special part designed by Bugaboo and approved by the CPSC that shields the release button of the car seat will be made available to customers mid December 2011.  Until this service solution is in place, consumers are advised to stop using their adapters and to register for the service solution.Previously, Bugaboo produced and distributed a warning label kit and warning stickers to customers and retailers to instruct them on proper use. An example of that label is shown below.

We trust that with this additional measure we have enabled families to safely and comfortably continue the use of the combination Bugaboo Cameleon  + the car seat + adapters (models 80401GC02 & 80400GC01) and Wheeled board model 85500WB01 (on the market since August 2009).

FAQs

Why this safety instruction?
The safety and wellbeing of our customers is always paramount to Bugaboo.

Bugaboo learned in early July that incorrect use of a car seat installed with adapters (models 80401GC02 & 80400GC01) on a Bugaboo Cameleon in combination with a Wheeled Board model 85500WB01 (on the market since August 2009) can cause a safety risk.  If the car seat with adapters is installed on the Bugaboo Cameleon with the child facing the world, and not facing the parent, the release button of the car seat is exposed to the possibility of being hit by the Bugaboo wheeled board accessory, becoming disconnected from adapter and potentially causing the car seat to fall.

Research led us to conclude that this risk occurs only rarely with this specific equipment combination and only with the child facing the world. The risk does not occur in other Bugaboo stroller + car seat + adapters combinations.

In July, we issued warning label kits and warning stickers to educate customers and retailers about the issue, as well as affixing warning labels to new adapters sold.  We now have a long-term solution designed to eliminate the potential safety risk.  As such, we are joining the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in voluntarily recalling those two adapter models to install this service solution, which will be available mid December 2011.

How are you informing parents with this specific equipment set about the risk?
We have taken various precautionary actions to inform parents on the correct use of the Bugaboo Cameleon / Wheeled Board model 85500WB01 (on the market since August 2009) and the car seat + adapters (models 80401GC02 & 80400GC01).
Those customers that have registered their car seat adapters received a letter + the warning label kit from us. This includes a warning sticker with illustrations on the correct use of the car seat with adapters on the Bugaboo Cameleon. Those same customers will now receive a letter informing them of the new service solution.  Customers who have not registered their car seat adapters can contact our Customer Services at serviceus@bugaboo.com or 1.800.460.2922 for information about how to obtain the service solution.  We are also providing information about the recall and service solution to retailers.

How were you informed about this risk?

We regularly review our consumer feedback database and identified the problem from a recent customer communication to our company. As the safety and wellbeing of our customers is always paramount to Bugaboo, we initiated the warning program in July to raise awareness on the appropriate use of this specific equipment set while we designed a long-term service solution, which is now available.

If you learned about the problem in July, why did it take so long to develop a long-term fix?

As soon as we learned of the potential safety risk created by the incorrect use of the car seat in combination with the Bugaboo Cameleon + Wheeled Board model 85500WB01 (on the market since August 2009) + adapters (models 80401GC02 & 80400GC01), we initiated efforts to distribute warning labels and communicate more explicitly on the correct and safe use of this specific equipment set.  We also took steps, in collaboration with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, to design a part that would eliminate any potential safety risk.  Our design for a shield to protect the release button on the car seat was recently approved by the CPSC and is now being made available to customers.

Does this risk occur with all Bugaboo strollers?

Thorough research has led us to conclude that this risk only occurs with the incorrect use of the US-manufactured car seat in combination with Bugaboo Cameleon + adapters (models 80401GC02 & 80400GC01) and Wheeled Board model 85500WB01 (on the market since August 2009) and with the improper use of installing the car seat with the child facing the world, and not facing the parent. The risk does not occur in other Bugaboo strollers/ car seat combinations.

Does this risk occur with the Bugaboo Frog or the Bugaboo Gecko?

No, this risk does not occur when you use either a Bugaboo Frog or a Bugaboo Gecko in combination with the car seat + adapters (models 80401GC02 & 80400GC01) and the Wheeled Board model 85500WB01 (on market since August 2009).

Is there a risk in using the adapters (models 80401GC02 & 80400GC01) and Wheeled Board model 85500WB01 (on market since August 2009) individually and in and of themselves?

No, there is no risk in using these adapters (models 80401GC02 & 80400GC01) and Wheeled Board model 85500WB01 (on market since August 2009) individually and in and of themselves.

How can I get the new part?

Those customers that have registered their car seat adapters with us will receive a letter. Customers that have not registered their car seat adapters can contact Customer Services at serviceus@bugaboo.com or 1.800.460.2922 to receive instructions on registering your adapters and receiving the free service kit.
